by Col. R Hariharan There is a lot of excitement as the Sri Lanka security forces are inching towards Kilinochchi from the southwest on multiple axes. The political tensions in Tamil Nadu over the plight of Tamil civilians in the war zone have added a bit of nervous expectation in Sri Lanka to the war scene. Broadly the security forces have enlarged the forward line roughly by eight km on the west of Kilinochi, isolating the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) stronghold of Nachikuda on the western coast. Task Force 1 which had bypassed Nachikuda, captured Manniyankulam and Vannrikulamon its advance along the A32 route to Pooneryn. Thus the LTTE access to sea routes to Tamil Nadu from the northern Mannar coast will probably come to an end shortly with these developments. B. Muralidhar Reddy COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s military on Wednesday said the LTTE’s Sea Tiger cadre carried out a suicide attack, targeting merchant ships MV Ruhuna and MV Nimalawa. Navy spokesperson D. K. P. Dassanayake claimed three LTTE suicide vessels were involved in the attack. “Navy sailors providing onboard security fired at the approaching boats and destroyed two of them,” he said. One of the boats exploded in close proximity to MV Nimalawa, damaging the ship’s hull. The third craft has been captured and the cadre operating the boat killed. The Navy described the incident as a cowardly attack to deny essential supplies to the civilians living in war-affected areas. By Michael Heath and Paul Tighe Oct. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Tamil Tiger rebels carried out a suicide attack on two Sri Lankan merchant ships bringing aid supplies to the northern Jaffna peninsula today, the Defense Ministry said. The Ruhuna and Nimalawa were targeted by three Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam vessels at 5:10 a.m., the ministry said in a statement. Sailors opened fire on the boats, destroying two and capturing one, according to navy spokesman DKP Dassanayke. The LTTE hasn't commented on the attack. One of the explosives-laden boats blew up, causing ``considerable damage'' to the hull of the Nimalawa, Dassanayke said. The Nimalawa is sinking and the Ruhuna was damaged after being rammed by rebel craft, Agence France-Presse reported.
