Chennai: Pro-LTTE elements on Sunday hijacked a massive rally at Rameswaram organised by Tamil film producers, directors, exhibitors and employees by openly coming out in support of separate Tamil Eelam and hailing LTTE leader V Prabhakaran as the valiant leader of Tamils the world over.
The rally culminated in a massive public meeting presided over by veteran director Bharthiraja who recalled his recent visit to Sri Lanka and secret meeting with Prabhakaran.
Bharathiraja had a dig at film stars who stayed away and decided instead to observe a fast on November 1. He said the massive turnout despite lack of glamour showed that "Tamil feeling is still alive".
In an indirect dig at superstar Rajnikant who has been resisting pressure from his fans to enter politics, Bharatiraja asked "Can’t you come out with at least a statement of condemnation of the happenings in Lanka to show your gratitude to the people of Tamil Nadu to whom you owe your position?"
Director Seeman said a Sikh could become Prime Minister of the country though Indira Gandhi was killed by Beant Singh and the killers of Mahatma Gandhi could come to power. But the Tamils have been left in the lurch because Rajiv Gandhi was killed by the LTTE. This was because there was no unity among Tamils. In an apparent reference to the reprieve Rajiv Gandhi killer Nalini got from the gallows, he said Sonia Gandhi intervened to save the killers of her husband but her government would not intervene to save thousands of Tamils being killed. This was because rulers in Delhi were afraid that a separate Eelam would give a fillip to demand for a separate Tamil Nadu, he said. (Deccan Herald)
Dismissing the argument that India cannot intervene in the affairs of another country, he cited the example of Bangladesh and asked, "If a nation could be born on the basis of language, why shouldn’t Tamils have a country of their own?" He said, In the land of Buddha, a film made by a Malayalam director (about the happenings in Sri Lanka) had been banned in India.
Director R K Selvamani said the Tamils here should show their solidarity with their brethren across the Palk Strait.
