Advancing troops had moved 4.5 km closer to the Kilinochchi town from Akkarayankulam amidst heavy resistance from the LTTE yesterday, Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.
Heavy fighting continued and the Army’s Task Force 1, 57 Division and Task Force 2 engaged the Tigers in the areas of Nachchikudah, Akkarayankulam East and Vannerikulam and on Sunday. 38 LTTE cadres were killed and 19 injured in the confrontations while eight soldiers were killed and 19 injured.
Troops captured a small Tiger controlled area in Andankulam in the Welioya front on Sunday killing four LTTE cadres and injuring nine. Two bunkers, two huts and an abandoned building were found in the captured area, Nanayakkara said. Troops also recovered one MGMG, one RPG, two LMG’s, five T-56 assault rifles, one ICOM set and a hand grenade.
Seven bodies of Tigers cadres were also recovered, Nanayakkara said.
Meanwhile 11 LTTE cadres were killed in Navvi east and four in Palamodai in the Vavuniya front.
One soldier died in the confrontations in Palamodai.
