LTTE terrorises civilians as certain defeat looms in last bastion- Daily News-2008/08/22

Ranil WIJAYAPALA] The situation in Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi, the narrow stretch of land where the LTTE has been entrapped along with a 200,000 civilian population is now becoming more sensitive with the Tiger outfit making desperate attempts to defend themselves from the pending definite defeat at the hands of the Security Forces. False propaganda has become the main tool of the LTTE especially aiming to mislead the civilian population entrapped in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts who have turned out to be their saviour at this moment. LTTE bunkers at Jeevan Base Intelligence reports indicate that the LTTE has been engaged in an intense campaign to convince the civilians that troops have been withdrawn from Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu battlefront. The most aggressive campaign is going on at the Mannar front where troops attached to the 58 Division under the command of Brigadier Shavendra Silva who has already entered Kilinochchi district passing the Mannar- Kilinochchi boundary, a...

Tiger strikes back- LakbimaNews defence column by Ranga Jayasooriya

Security forces inching to Pooneryn, Kilinochchi Female Tiger cadres removed from battlefront, replaced by Charles Anthony units On August 1 after many reversals on the battle field, the Tigers hit back. The attack was anticipated and its ferocity took a toll on the security forces. Elite fighting units of the LTTE, the Charles Anthony and Imran Pandian Brigades launched a major counter attack against the army’s 57 Division, which was consolidating the newly captured areas south of Mallavi. The troops were busy digging trenches and bunkers when they were confronted by waves of guerrilla fighters of the battle hardened fighting formations of the LTTE. Two weeks back, the military monitored a heavy build up of LTTE cadres in Mallavi and Thunukkai, following the rout of a unit of a Charles Anthony “regiment” in Vannikulam. The Tiger cadres retreated from Vannikulam towards Mallavi and Thunukkai, two strategically important towns with a sizable civilian population. Intelligence so...
