He closely observed the arrival of Agricultural Development Minister Maithripala Sirisena for what was dubbed as the "national festival" in abandoned paddy fields in the village of Kamuburugoda-Bolabotuwa. He had noted the registration number and the colour of the Mitsubishi Montero in which the Minister arrived. He was chief guest at the ceremony in the absence of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. October 6, 2008: The army is now four kilometers from Kilinochchi, the LTTE "capital." The army is also fighting its way up the coast, and the end of LTTE control over Sri Lankan territory appears imminent. The LTTE has attempted to stop this advance with a terror bombing campaign. There have been six such attacks in the capital in the past five weeks. But the bombs have been small and poorly constructed, and merely made Sri Lankans more determined to finish off the LTTE once and for all. But the army is in no hurry. All guns are now directed towards the centre of Kilinochchi as troops have already marched into its doorstep taking the outer periphery of this highly defended town which stretches from Iranamadu area within the 60 mm and 80 mm mortar range of the Security Forces. They are getting ready to assault the inner areas of Kilinochchi. by Harischandra Gunaratna At least two Tigers were killed in an exchange of fire between the Police Commandos and the LTTE in the Kodumadu lagoon in Kalavanchikuddi. According to Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara the STF personnel had spotted a boat in the lagoon and ordered those in the boat to alight. "Pretending that they obeyed the orders of the Police Commandos, the Tiger cadres moved out from the boat and suddenly started firing at them. But the STF men fired back and the boat exploded leaving two LTTE cadres dead," he said. STF men recovered the two dead bodies and a haul of weapons with a T-56 assault rifle and a small quantities of explosives he said. Police commandos have recovered a currency note used by undercover LTTE operatives sent on missions to Colombo and its suburbs to identify each other. Acting on information elicited by intelligence operatives, commandos Thursday morning recovered the note and a small quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives buried in a land adjacent to the Wattala Lyceum International school. Defence Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said yesterday that the Sea Tiger unit of the LTTE had now almost come to an end because of the Sri Lanka Navy. “There was a time when some overestimated the power of the Sea Tigers, but now we know they have no such power at all; our Navy has successfully countered the Sea Tiger power,” Mr. Rajapaksa said. He was addressing a ceremony at the Welisara Naval base, to mark the completion of the 100th‘Arrow’ type gunboat for the Navy’s newly formed Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS). “The Navy had completely damaged the arms-supplying network of the LTTE, by destroying a floating arms ship on the high seas,” he said, adding : “It was a severe setback for the LTTE”. The Nazis developed the Tiger tank, launched the V-1 and V-2 rockets and fought the Battle of the Bulge in the closing stages of the war, when they had already lost in the strategic sense. The battle of Iwo Jima is the classic model of a fanatical, suicidal, dug–in fighting force defending its home turf against a final onslaught. It was the toughest possible going but the US Marines won. It is only to be expected that the Tigers would offer the stiffest possible resistance in their Ithiyabhoomi or ‘heartland’. In their best case scenario they would turn Kilinochchi–Mullaitivu into a meat-grinder and then launch tactical counteroffensives which could develop into strategic ones, reversing their losses.
