AGGRESSIVE Sri Lankan government forces continue to push deeper into the Tamil Tiger heartland and are now within reach of their administrative capital, raising hopes that the end of a brutal 25-year civil war may be near. The military campaign has benefited from an international crackdown on the Tigers' fundraising and smuggling networks, and high-level defections that have undermined grassroots Tamil support for its iron-willed chief, Velupillai Prabhakaran. At least 46 LTTE cadres were killed and 16 suffered injuries due to Wednesday’s clashes in Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Welioya and Vavuniya fronts, the Defence Ministry said. Five soldiers have laid their lives for defending the motherland while another 34 suffered injuries, it said. Meanwhile, combat helicopters of the air force targeted the LTTE’s bunkers in Kilinochchi and Welioya area yesterday. The first raid was launched around 7.00 am when air force MI 24 helicopters carried out air strikes on LTTE bunker line in East of Nachchikudah area. These air strikes were made to support the 58 Division troops who are advancing into Kilinochchi area. In the second bombing the air force carried out air strikes using combat helicopters on the LTTE who were building bunkers near North of Thannimuruppukulam tank area in Welioya around 11 am yesterday. The Navy radar had detected the Tiger aircraft flying towards Trincomalee at a distance of 45 Km. on Tuesday. The Tigers dropped two bombs, of which only one exploded killing four Navy personnel and injuring 14. A section of the Navy base was damaged and two boats were destroyed. By Sunil Jayasiri While the Sri Lanka Navy and Air Force launched separate inquiries into the LTTE air strike on the Trincomalee naval base on Tuesday, seven sailors, who were injured during the incident were transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for treatment yesterday, a defence official said. The condition of one sailor was said to be critical. The official also said that inquiry teams from both the Navy and Air Force in Colombo visited the scene in Trincomalee and initiated inquiries. The two teams will inquire, among other things, as to how the rebel air craft managed to enter the air space in the area and how it managed to escape despite heavy resistance from the ground. A military official told Daily Mirror that two light aircraft had dropped at least two bombs near the Harbour dockyard at around 9.00 pm and both had exploded making loud sounds and injuring at least four sailors. The airplanes had turned away when Navy personnel on the ground opened fire at them. He said the LTTE planes had come from the direction of the sea off Mullaitivu and were first detected by Trincomalee radars: "The target could have been troops boarding the Jaffna bound troop carrier 'Jet Liner'." The official added that: "the bombs that exploded failed to inflict much damage." The LTTE carried out an abortive air raid on the Trincomalee Naval Base around 9 p.m. last night. According to the official Defense Ministry website, the LTTE aircraft had dropped two improvised bombs and fled the area. At the time of going to press, unconfirmed reports cited around 18 injured. Navy Spokesman D.K.P Dassanayake stated that they had received reports of the attack three minutes before the planes were sighted in Trincomalee. “So we attacked it when it approached, but it dropped two bombs and flew away. Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops are now moving towards the LTTE’s High Security Zone (HSZ). Progress is slow because the path ahead is lined with mines and booby traps. Troops have to traverse through jungle and open area as well through some villages too. A reliable source reported that, the LTTE had ordered the villagers to vacate their houses and confine themselves to LTTE controlled areas and used older civilians as human shields. The LTTE has positioned snipers to attack troops, according to a battlefront officer who said that this LTTE strategy is well known to the SLA.
