Una maniobra gravitacional en torno a Venus permitiría ahorrar combustible y reducir la duración de las misiones de ida y vuelta a Marte, según los cálculos realizados por un grupo de ingenieros y físicos.
Los sobrevuelos del planeta que se sitúa en la órbita más cercana a la Tierra "proporcionan oportunidades para practicar operaciones científicas en el espacio profundo", y también "ofrecen numerosas opciones de regreso seguro", sostienen los autores. Las ventajas se hacen visibles en comparación con los programados vuelos directamente a Marte, que serían "más largos y a menor ritmo".
Despegar cuando la Tierra y Marte se alinean en sus órbitas, algo que ocurre solo cada 26 meses, y aguantar en el planeta rojo hasta que los planetas vuelvan a alinearse para el regreso es el escenario principal en el que trabajan las agencias espaciales. Implica que los astronautas estén prácticamente atrapados en Marte durante un año y medio, independientemente de la situación de cada uno.


La alternativa es recurrir a las fuerzas gravitacionales de Venus que podrían redirigir la nave espacial desde cierto punto en su trayecto hacia la órbita del otro planeta contiguo. Tal y como sucede con los cometas que pasan junto al Sol, el sobrevuelo le proporcionaría a la misión una aceleración para el segundo tramo del vuelo.

Según los nuevos cálculos, de ese modo el viaje podría hacerse realidad cada 19 meses. Para una devolución más rápida de los tripulantes, la estancia en Marte debería ser de hasta un mes, e incluso podría ser recortada en caso de alguna emergencia.
